Engineering Inspirations 2006

Engineering Inspirations

The prestigious Engineering Inspirations Education Showcase took place at the Yorkshire Air Museum on Wednesday 5th July.

Guest speaker at the event was Professor Tony Robards, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for External Relations at the University of York.

There were a number of activities for students to get involved in as they awaited the results of the judging. These included the crazy catapult challenge, the Electronics Yorkshire mobile training unit, the solar boat challenge, making and launching paper rockets and planes, the final of the regional Mechathlon (mechanical athlete!) challenge, and to the amusement of the students, even teacher challenges were organised!

The overall winner this year, taking the Sir George Cayley Cup to Archbishop Holgate's School, was John Hattam with 'Vista' - a flat pack contemporary lectern.

Mini-Robot Wars 2006

For the first time at the E.I, we had the regional final of the Engineering a Better World project Mini-Robot Wars. Sixteen Teams took part in a knockout event and the last team still "standing" at the end was the winner.

There were some real rough and tumble bouts, leading up to a very closely fought final, eventually being won by "Fireball", well done a finely engineered robot.

Remember, for this event it is the quality of the build that provides for reliability in the arena that counts as well as the skill in handling the robot.

The next Mini-Robot Wars event will be held in February at the Venture Fest on York Race course (not actually on the course, but in the stands). For further details contact Yvonne Emmerson at NYBEP.

Robot Sumo Wrestling

Robot Sumo Wrestling is a very challenging project requiring not only very good engineering skills but a sound understanding of how to program a PIC micro-controller chip. All the information for building a robot wrestler is available on the website or from Yvonne Emmerson at NYBEP .

This was the first time a regional event was held for this competition and only four teams managed to bring a working robot to the competition, which still lead to an interesting final bout with Spider winning for the first time.

There will be another event at next years E.I. So there is plenty of time for other teams to get designing and building their robots so that we can have a really hotly contested final in 2007. So come on all you budding robotic engineers, get working on it.
