Engineering Inspirations 2005

Engineering Inspirations

The prestigious Engineering Inspirations Education Showcase took place at the Yorkshire Air Museum on Tuesday 5th July. A record number of 115 projects were entered by students from schools all across the region. This is nearly double that of last year, which itself was a record year, and shows how strongly the event has fired the imagination of students and teachers.

The event was attended by high profile guest speaker, Sir Peter Williams, CBE FREng. FRS, Chairman of the U.K. Engineering and Technology Board and the National Physical Laboratory. Sir Peter is also currently the joint patron of WISE (Women into Science and Engineering).

There were a number of activities for students to get involved in as they awaited the results of the judging. These included the DigiBus, miniature locomotive, the solar boat challenge, making and launching paper rockets and planes, the final of the regional Mechathlon (mechanical athlete!) challenge, and to the amusement of the students, even teacher challenges were organised!

The overall winner this year, taking the Sir George Cayley Cup to Harrogate Granby High School, was Rose-Marie Almond, whose external remote control for an electric wheelchair won the GSPK sponsored Control Systems award in the 15-16 year old category.
